Winner of the Golden Bear in Berlin this year, this visceral drama has sparked heated controversy about law enforcement in Brazil. Captain Nascimento, due to become a father, is compelled to leave the danger and violence of the Special Police Operations Battalion, but first must decide which of his colleagues has what it takes to survive the drug- infested slums of Rio. While the story is fictional, director Padilha calls into question the very real social structures and conventions that perpetuate crime and demand justice at any cost.
