Ed Wood
Touching tribute to the filmmaker and arguably Burton’s finest movie.
Johnny Depp plays the cross-dressing, margin-dwelling Wood in Burton’s affectionate tribute to the 50s film-maker whose Plan 9 from Outer Space was once voted "the worst film of all time".
Arguably Burton's finest movie, a sly, touching, affectionate tribute to the 50s film-maker whose Plan 9 from Outer Space was once voted 'the worst film of all time'. Shot in glorious black and white by Stefan Czapsky, with Johnny Depp playing the cross-dressing, margin-dwelling Wood as wide-eyed and sanguine, the film never belittles his talents (or lack of them), rather celebrating his unbridled (if delusional) optimism, while the friendship between Wood and Bela Lugosi can be seen to mirror that of Burton and Vincent Price. It won Oscars for Martin Landau's poignant portrait of Lugosi, and for make-up artist Rick Baker.
