The Edge of Heaven

Fassbinder-inspired social drama with an outstanding character development

I expected a great deal from Akin, after seeing 'Head-On, and he has delivered. A mature, beautifully crafted film which achieves that pebble in the pond effect. The ripples spread out, wider and and wider. And playing that post-film game of connecting the plot dots was, for once, a very satisfying experience. The screenplay dextrously dealt with complex, interconnecting lives, demonstrating both credible coincidence and great psychological acuity. One of the best in the Festival programme. I hope the film does well.
