One Hundred Nails
A provocative, anti-religious statement from Ermanno OlmiOne Hundred Nails
An act of outrageous vandalism in a library of rare religious books (one hundred spikes driven through priceless texts) is the intriguing starting point for this satirical, subtle, anti-religious allegory.
A disaffected theology professor, the supposed culprit of the crime, discards his past life and goes to live amongst a small village community that perches on the banks of the River Po. His entrance into this simple life has a galvanising and bewitching effect upon the villagers, but meanwhile the police are gradually hunting him down.
Presented to great acclaim at Cannes, and a major box office success in Italy, this is apparently Italian maestro Ermanno Olmi's final film. What a fitting way to bow out-this unusual, finely wrought and intelligent fable appropriately recalls and echoes his greatest work in films such as The Tree of Wooden Clogs.
