Judging from past crowd pleasing films chosen for this slot I'd guess that this year its going to be Kenneth Branaghs' remake of 'Sleuth' which has a UK release date of 23 Nov.
Im still tempted to get a ticket in the off chance that its something more daring like the Coens 'No country for Old men' which is sadly not part of this years LFF despite the rave reviews from other festivals (TIFF, Cannes..)

'In the valley of Elah' is another likely candidate also missing from the festival

My guesses are: Sweeney Todd. It oozes Surprise Film! Tim Burton, loads of Brit actors.
Love in the Time of Cholera. Mike Newell, famous book, anticipation all around.

If the surprise film is Sleuth I'm be devastated, I've seen it and it has to one of the most pointless remakes and a true cinema turkey. I'm hoping for No Country for Old Men but I'll be happy with any of the suggestions or, perhaps, The Kite Runner.

Excuse my poor typing above... Perhaps a bigger clue to the film's identity can be found through the films that Premier PR, who are looking after the festival, are handling outside of LFF... These include No Country for Old Men and Sleuth....

I read a rumour somewhere that it might be There Will Be Blood, which would make me very happy. I thought Mrs Henderson Presents was a very boring choice last year so I'd be disappointed if it was Sleuth.

Actually last year's surprise film was 'The Prestige'. Though entertaining it did come out a couple of weeks later, and that seems to be what the past two years films have had in common.I remember when the surprise films used to be films that weren't scheduled for release until the following year. What's annoyed me in the past couple of years is seeing films that websites start giving away tickets for free screenings a couple of days later. So sadly it looks as if it might well be 'Sleuth' which I'm not looking forward to at all.'No Country for Old Men' or 'There Will Be Blood' would be perfect but I just can't see it happening.

Brilliant, brilliant choice. Exactly what I hoped it would be and what an amazing film it is. It will stay with me for a long, long time!
