Mars Attacks!
Tim Burton’s gleefully anarchic war of the worlds.
Released the same year as Independence Day, Mars Attacks takes its nostalgic cue from cheesy 50s and 60s sci-fi movies and great pleasure in Earth’s destruction.
Based on a series of bubble gum cards and released the same year as Roland Emmerich's similarly themed (if markedly more gung-ho and less satirical) Independence Day, Burton's gleefully anarchic war of the worlds takes its nostalgic cue from cheesy 50s and 60s sci-fi movies and great pleasure in Earth's destruction. The script tears into the political establishment, the scientific community, New Agers and the media, the star-studded ensemble cast playing it beautifully tongue-in-cheek. And where else would you see Pierce Brosnan's disembodied head grafted onto a chihuahua?
