Remarkable and rewarding for its extreme fidelity to Kafka's novel about a land surveyor (or is he?) frustrated and humiliated both by the bewildering bureaucracy of the Castle and by the villagers who give him shelter, this persuasively portrays a world permeated by paranoia, impotence and guilt. Haneke's customary rigour, understatement and sense of irony make for what is arguably still the most truly Kafka-esque movie to date.
