The Shanghai Gesture
Josef von Sternberg's follow-up to Shanghai Express with Gene Tierney and Victor Mature.
Following Shanghai Express, von Sternberg visited China. The experience informs this version of a 1920s melodrama originally set in the brothel of 'Mother Goddam'. Gambling and lechery replace opium and prostitution, but the roulette pit of 'Mother Gin Sling' is something to see. Gene Tierney is indolently beautiful, but Victor Mature out-vamps her with ease.
