This Land Is Mine
Jean Renoir's heartfelt plea for humane values, made during WW2.
In a Hollywood studio, the exiled Renoir created an occupied country clearly intended to bring to mind his native France, the setting for a story about a shy village teacher (a very affecting Charles Laughton) arrested by the Nazis and forced to choose between collaboration and resistance. A heartfelt plea for humane values made when European civilisation was threatened by unthinkable barbarism.
