Silent Britain

Journey back to a time before 'talkies'.

This collection brings together a selection of surviving silent British feature films from the BFI National Archive, allowing unparalleled access to this almost unknown period in our cinematic history.

From the early development of the feature film in the 1910s to the explosion of creativity in the late 1920s, these films are a fascinating glimpse into the world of British film between the wars - before the coming of sound on the cusp of the 1930s changed the industry forever. As an introduction to this collection, you can also view the invaluable BFI/BBC co-production Silent Britain (2006).
