Victor Hugo's novel has been filmed many times, but never better than in this production from 1939. It tells the classic story of Quasimodo, the good- hearted bellringer, virtually imprisoned in the bell tower of Notre Dame Cathedral and forced to do the bidding of Frollo, the Chief Justice. When young Esmerelda is framed for a crime she didn't commit, Quasimodo finds himself in the middle of a number of different plans to try and right this wrong.
