Vicki Bennett: Trying Things Out

Vicki Bennett’s placement with the BBC was for four months. She already had substantial experience of working with moving image archives, mainly with Rick Prelinger’s remarkable collection of US public information films.

For the BBC Creative Archive she produced a short film using imagery collaged from a number of documentaries made between 1951 and 1980. This included images from The Festival of Britain and other footage portraying optimistic outlooks on post-war Britain.

Trying Things Out tells the story of how the artist can bring about positive change in culture, with a dark and witty knowing look at futuristic media. By playfully juggling layers of imagery and context the short film shows how access to film archives can inspire creative new work.

Vicki’s tip:

“Artists need the freedom to explore.”
