Social disorder seen as comedy. A masterless samurai strolls into town and gets half of the baddies to obliterate the other half. Exhilarating, surprising, kinetic, and very funny, the picture gives us a very human hero, who in Kurosawa's words is 'different from us. He's able to stand squarely in the middle and stop the fight.'
