BFI Media Conference 2014

At the BFI Media Conference in July 2014 we were delighted to welcome a wide range of speakers.

The BFI Media Conference 2014 offered an exciting cross section of speakers from the film and TV industries, teaching and research. For plenary sessions we were delighted to welcome Alison Owen (founder and producer, Ruby Film & Television and producer Suffragette, Saving Mr Banks, Shaun of the Dead) and Adam MacDonald (director, Sky 1 HD). Industry speakers included Samira Ahmed (BBC Newswatch), Jesse Armstrong (writer Babylon, Peep Show), Sam Lavender (commissioning executive, Film 4) and Lucy Brett (Head of Education, BBFC).

Teaching sessions covered everything from Rob Miller on ‘Changing Media Regulation’ to Leanne Arkell and Sally Thomas on ‘Teaching Horror’, complete with a lot of fake blood. Research sessions included Karin Wahl-Jorgensen (University of Cardiff) on ‘Enriching Media Learning: Studying Industry Failure’ and Keith Perera (University of Sussex) on the latest research into digital learning in the classroom. Additional programme highlights included special events with writers Owen Jones (Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class) and Jon Savage (Teenage: The Creation of Youth Culture), and a preview of Pawel Pawlikowski’s breathtaking new feature film Ida, released September 2014.

The next BFI Media Conference will take place at BFI Southbank on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 July 2015.
