To celebrate the screening of Capitaine Thomas Sankara at BFI Southbank this September, we’ve teamed up with Pluto Books to offer you a fantastic goody bag to win, perfect for documentary film lovers and historians alike!
- A pair of tickets to see Capitaine Thomas Sankara + Q&A with Dr Ama Biney, political historian. Don’t miss this acclaimed documentary about the intelligent, radical and humane former President of Burkina Faso, at BFI Southbank Saturday 21 September 2019 14:00. The film is meticulously composed from archival footage and reconstructs Sankara’s life and leadership challenge as well as the radical reforms brought about during his short term in office — from 4 August 1983 until his tragic assassination on 15 October 1987. A punk score by The Ex reflects and responds to the radicalism and idealism of this iconic African leader.
- Plus a copy of A Certain Amount of Madness: The Life, Politics and Legacies of Thomas Sankara, edited by Amber Murrey courtesy of our friends at Pluto Books. This book looks at Sankara’s political philosophies and legacies and their relevance today. Analyses of his synthesis of Pan-Africanism and humanist Marxist politics, as well as his approach to gender, development, ecology and decolonisation offer new insights to Sankarist political philosophies. Critical evaluations of the limitations of the revolution examine his relationship with labour unions and other aspects of his leadership style. His legacy is revealed by looking at contemporary activists, artists and politicians who draw inspiration from Sankarist thought in social movement struggles today, from South Africa to Burkina Faso.
