Set in the 1950s, the story of two girls from rural Ireland, from their convent schooldays as adolescents through to their move to Dublin and eventual emigration to England.

The progress of two friends in Ireland, Kate and Baba, from their schooldays at the village school through convent school and their first experiences of independence in Dublin. The film ends with their move to London. Central to the story is the developing love between Kate and the worldly Mr Gentleman.
