Kate and Baba are two young girls living in Dublin. By chance they meet Eugene, a middle aged writer. He and Kate have an affair but when her family hear that he is married they force her to go home. Kate runs away and goes back to Eugene pursued by her family who are repulsed by Eugene's housekeeper.

They become lovers but their relationship is not easy and they quarrel. Kate is hurt and runs back to Baba who is leaving for England. They decide to go together, Kate believing that Eugene will follow her. However a new life begins in London and she gradually forgets the past. Based on the novel originally published as The Lonely Girl by Edna O'Brien.

The love affair between a young country girl and an older writer which fades away, and the girl leaves, older, sadder and wiser.
