Introduction
“One of the most fascinating elements...is the casual, positive portrayal of neighbour Paddy and his boyfriend a mere four years after the…release of Victim began to assault England’s anti-homosexuality laws.”
Nathaniel Thompson, Mondo Digital, 2010
When Sally comes to London to pursue a modelling career, she moves in with Angela and Dee and discovers the world of the carefree bachelor girl. Over a weekend of parties and romantic encounters with very different kinds of men (including Klaus Kinski’s corrupt landlord and Ian McShane’s skirt-chasing photographer) they each learn about life’s pleasures and pains.
Gerry O’Hara followed up his directorial debut, That Kind of Girl (1963), with The Pleasure Girls, and went on to direct a number of films which explored a range of personal issues, such as infidelity and domestic abuse, with intelligence and sensitivity. With lively performances from its young ensemble cast, this sparkling drama bears all the hallmarks of director Gerry O’Hara’s assured style.
Girls would have even more fun in Swinging London in the farcical Smashing Time (1967), starring Lynn Redgrave and Rita Tushingham.
