The Scented Envelopes (1923)

Nayland Smith, entrusted by the British and Chinese authorities in Peking with the task of bringing to justice Dr Fu-Manchu a master criminal, comes to London and enlists the help of his friend Dr. Petrie. Knowing Sir Crichton Davy to be in danger they go to warn him, only to find that he has been mysteriously murdered. The same night an attempt is made on Smith by means of a poisonous insect. He kills it and realises how Davy met his death, the scented enveloped delivered to Davy attracting the insect.

Note: A Kinematograph Weekly review (15th May 1923 p. 74) refers to a lizard being substituted for an insect.
