In Köpenick, a suburb of Berlin 1918-23, a young Polish refugee couple try to make the best of the armistice but instead suffer the appalling effects of the aftermath of war. They have nowhere to live and are robbed of their food but ultimately "Love makes beautiful all that it touches... for where there is love there is hope and triumph."
