Back from the Dead (1957)

Film details

Drawn by some irresistible force, Dick Anthony (Arthur Franz) takes his young wife Mandy (Peggie Castle), and her sister Kate (Marsha Hunt) on holiday to the scene of his first wife Felicia's tragic death by drowning six years previously.

While walking by the cliffs one day, Mandy experiences strong premonitions of danger and the evening succumbs to a violent breakdown which results in complete loss of consciousness.

On her recovery, she does not recognise her sister and further shocks her husband by claiming to be his first wife. By revealing facts which only Felicia could have known, she convinces Dick that the earthbound spirit of the drowned woman has indeed taken over the body of Mandy.

Kate too is brought to this horrifying realisation when Felicia's mother, Mrs. Bradley (Helen Wallace), acknowledges the reincarnation of her dead daughter.

Dick and Kate learn that in the vicinity lives Maitre Renall (Otto Reichow), a practitioner of the Black Arts whose following includes Mrs. Bradley. Determined to fight for Mandy's return to normality, Kate is almost murdered by Felicia who enters her room at night and turns on the gas jets. This attempt is foiled by Kate's sudden awakening in response to a dream in which she is warned by Mandy.

Kate contacts Renall's assistant, Nancy (Marianne Stewart), who agrees to initiate the girl into his sect. The same day Kate receives a call from Mr. Bradley (James Bell) who warns her of the danger she faces and advises her to avoid Renall at all costs. That afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Bradley are found dead.

Felicia is locked in her room but by a clever ruse persuades Kate to release her. She stuns the girl and rejoins Renall. Deciding the net is closing in and realising Felicia is loosing her power, they seek a solution in a ritual necessitating a human sacrifice. They kidnap a young neighbour Molly (Evelyn Scott).

Arriving at Renall's residence, Dick rushes forward and overpowers him. While Nancy forces Dick to release Renall and covers the latter with her gun, Dick tries to restrain the violent Felicia who collapses with shock.

There is a loud bang as Nancy, her hate uncontrollable, shoots Renall dead.

When Felicia recovers under the anxious gaze of Dick and Kate, she is once more the loving Mandy.
