Synopsis

The origins and growth of the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, are described through interviews with members of the 69 Theatre Company and the new Royal Exch ange Theatre, notably Michael Elliott, Resident Director, and James Maxwell, an actor, as well as builders and designers. A working lunch for the cast of "The Rivals" and a press conference in which future productions are described are also shown. The various stages in the construction of the theatre are recorded, as well as the dress rehearsal of "The Rivals", and the Gala Perfo rmance on 8 April 1976 to test the acoustics The origins and growth of the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, are described through interviews with members of the 69 Theatre company.
