Secretary Jane Barker is an avid movie fan and believes that real life is just as it is in the movies. She is given a million dollars by rich man Jonathan Turner when he believes he is dying. She marries her penniless boyfriend without telling him about the money, but she becomes disillusioned when her life and marriage don't come up to her romantic expectations. She seeks a divorce but when her husband finds out about the money he sues for a share. Turner also tries to get his money back, although it turns out that he had swindled money out of Jane's father in the past.

The character of Jane frequently imagines personal experiences as though she is in a movie and several stars appear during such sequences, including Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, Dennis Morgan, Jack Carson, Janis Paige, Alexis Smith and Eleanor Parker.
