The French Revolution and the Long Napoleonic wars which followed called for music that was grand in scale, tempestuous in style. The composer who reflected the times was Beethoven, who moved to Vienna at the age of 22, first taking lessons off the venerable Haydn, whose own music was increasingly outspoken and demanding.
