Period drama. In the hills of Provence, village elder César Soubeyran and his nephew Ugolin covet a piece of land which seems to be the perfect site to grow their carnations as it has an underground spring beneath it. However, the rightful heir appears in Jean, who has moved here from the city with his wife and young children to farm the land. The villagers scheme to change Jean's mind about rustic life, and sabotage his water supply. (Part two of the story is told in the film 'Manon des Sources'.)
