Synopsis

A compilation of six plays written by Alan Bennett, which were broadcast on London Weekend Television in 1978/9 under the series title `By Alan Bennett - six plays'. They are: `Afternoon off' (62 mins.) directed by Stephen Frears, with Henry Mann, Peter Butterworth, Thora Hird, Anna Massey and Alan Bennett, about a Chinese waiter in a seaside hotel going to meet a potential girlfriend on his afternoon off; `All day on the sands' (65 mins.) directed by Giles Foster, with Alun Armstrong and Marjorie Yates as a couple who decide to holiday in Morecambe as a change from Minorca. He has a guilty secret; `Doris and Doreen' (73 mins.) directed by Stephen Frears, with Prunella Scales, Patricia Routledge and Peter Postlethwaite, about two women who are happy working in an obscure, provincial office, but redundancy is in the air...; `Me! I'm afraid of Virginia Woolf' (65 mins.) directed by Stephen Frears, with Neville Smith, Julie Walters, Frank Middlemass and Thora Hird, about a disenchanted lecturer at a technical college, who is about to turn a corner...; `The Old crowd' (61 mins) directed by Lindsay Anderson, with Jill Bennett, Rachel Roberts and Frank Grimes, about a middle class couple who are holding a housewarming party in their new home; `One fine day' (84 mins.) directed by Stephen Frears, with Dave Allen, Robert Stephens and Dominic Guard, about an estate agent with a large office block on his books, which no-one seems to want.
