Synopsis

When Karol Wojtila, Archbishop of Cracow, ascended the throne of St.Peter as Pope John Paul II, he became the first non-Italian Pope in more than 400 years. As well as being the story of how a Pole became Pope, this is a story of modern Poland and the struggle for survival of the Catholic faith against repression.
