Documentary set in a gypsy settlement outside the provincial Hungarian town of Gyongyos, fifty miles from Budapest. Follows the lives of two closely related gypsy families struggling to maintain their distinctive traditions in a modern communist state. At the time of filming, it was government policy to absorb gypsies into Hungary's "ruling" working class, and the law insisted that they work, often for very low wages in industry or on collective farms, but wherever possible they tried to find a living outside the official economy.
