An Angel at My Table (1992)

Film details

Based on the three volumes of autobiography written by New Zealand author, Janet Frame. The first part 'To the Island' recreates her childhood in a poor family during the Depression; a painfully shy, studious girl, she takes refuge in books, especially poetry, and in a fantasy life. The second part 'An Angel at My Table', starts with her life at a student teacher training college and moves through an eight year period in a mental home where she undergoes electric shock treatment for wrongly diagnosed schizophrenia, until finally her first novel is published and she is released. Part three 'Envoy from the Mirror City' sees her in Europe, involved in the '50s avant-garde in London, Paris and Spain and her return to New Zealand as a writer soon to win international acclaim.
