Looks at the damage caused by the oil industry in Western Siberia to the ecology of the region, in pollution of rivers and destruction of Tundra, and the potential for an increase in the problem with proposals to further develop the industry in the area, with oil and gas fields seen by the Soviet government as essential in helping with its economical problems. It also considers some of the enviromentalists in Siberia and Moscow, who are using their new-found freedoms of speech to speak out about the damage being done to the environment.
