Reveals how standards have been central to the technological explosion of the last 200 years. In 1830, Charles Babbage could not complete his famous design for a mechanical computer because of the lack of standardised parts. Standardisation has reduced technology to parts so simple and repeatable that they mimic fundamental natural elements like atoms and molecules.
