Holding on Episode 2 (1977)

Film details

Charlie is determined to be a stevedore like his father, a job he can have when he is old enough by right of his father having been one. He rejects his step-father Herbert's advice and leaves school finding work as a telegram boy until he is old enough to work on the docks. The First World War breaks out and Vi, who is fond of her step-father, is devastated when Herbert volunteers for the army and is sent away. Charlie however is indifferent, and is initiated into the world of sexual experience by a woman encountered whilst delivering telegrams. In 1918 however, Charlie is called up and sent to France.
