The daughter of the family at Westmoor Hall Farm set out on horseback to inform the Royalist, Sir John Warren that his son is held captive by a group of Parliamentarians, led by Lieutenant Cutts. She is passed on her journey by her father, serving with the Royalist Army, who is on his way to requisition Sir John's home, which is surrendered without resistance. Meanwhile, the girl's mother has been forced to hand over a purse of money to Lieutenant Cutts as a price for his keeping quiet about the harbouring of Ralph Warren. Thomas Palmer and his daughter return to Westmoor Hall in company with Sir John. Palmer intercepts the Lieutenant who tries to escape with the money. He is caught, Ralph is released and the two families start to discuss their future.
