Destruction (1995)

Film details

Synopsis

Relates how Richard the Lionheart set out with King Philip II of France to do battle with Saladin to capture Jerusalem. Looks at the politics affecting both sides and the stalemate and compromise they tried to reach. Considers the mass killings of Muslim prisoners and other atrocities perpetrated by Richard I and the Crusaders, and the eventual replacement of Saladin by a more fanatical and less tolerant Muslim leader. Recounts the eventual collapse of the Crusades and loss of the Holy Land. Terry Jones restages the last Fourth Crusade as part of the Venice Carnival, and reveals that the Crusaders never went to Jerusalem but attacked, sacked and plundered the Christian city of Constantinople - with many of their looted treasures still adorning Venetian churches and other famous buildings.
