Synopsis

Personal film-essay on Japanese cinema by director Nagisa Oshima composed entirely of archival footage. Considers the rediscovery of Daisuke Ito's Chuji's Travel Diary (1927) and the effects of a re-examination of Japanese film history on modern Japanese culture. Analyses the drive for greater realism in depictions of family life and society; the appeal of war films and comedies; struggles against censorship, etc.
