Pictures on the Piano (1995)

Film details

Synopsis

Documentary musical exploring one of music's most important social functions - entertainment. Features three people, their musical aspirations and the significance the piano has in their lives and dreams. Dialogue is minimal, with personality, imagination and individual experience expressed through the music and the juxtaposition of images. The score also acts as commentary by means of variations on the themes played by the pianists. The programme begins in a school in the Yorkshire Dales, where a child is encouraged to improvise at the piano. The melodic lines she plays are taken up, accompanied and developed by the score as the story moves on to Blackpool, the home of seaside entertainment, and to further musical encounters.
