Film details


Opera by Wagner, first performed in 1845, about a knight, Tannhäuser, who is torn between his love for Venus and a noble landowner's niece, Elisabeth. He competes in a song contest for Elisabeth's hand, but his song of carnal love so offends that he is ordered to seek Papal absolution. The Pope declares that when his holy staff sprouts, the knight will be forgiven.
