Synopsis

Examines the science of cryptography, or code-making, which is at the centre of a fierce battle between governments, scientists and civil libertarians. Looks in particular at the potential development by the British government of a massive electronic surveillance system which would allow the government to hold the "spare keys" to encryption systems and allow it to eavesdrop on all digital communications. Other issues covered are encryptions used to block government wire taps and how codes are used by criminals, political groups and individual people all over the world.
