Synopsis

The second programme in a five-part series in which Charles Wheeler analyses changes in American society since the 1960s. Uses archive footage to chart the origins and decline of Lyndon Johnson's `Great Society' programme, the president's attempt to bring about a social revolution. Includes evidence from a women, now in her 40s, whose family featured in a BBC film about white poverty in Kentucky in the sixties, who reveals how Present Johnson's domestic programmes transformed her family's life.
