Synopsis

The third programme in a five-part series in which Charles Wheeler analyses profound changes that have taken place in American society since the 1960s. Looks at the civil rights movement in America, from the passing of President Johnson's Voting Rights Act of 1965, through increasing racial tension, riots, the white backlash and the murder in 1968 of Dr. Martin Luther King. Examines how these events have helped to shape present US politics, and looks at the stance today of Louis Farrakhan, the radical leader of the Nation of Islam.
