Film details

Synopsis

Disaster movie. Emotionally scarred volcanologist Harry Dalton of the U.S. Geological Survey is sent to the picturesque town of Dante's Peak (newly voted America's 'second most desirable place to live, population under 20,000') to check on some signs of activity in the dormant volcano that towers above the town. After finding a couple of bathers burnt to death in a mountain hot spring, he suggests putting the town on alert, but his boss Paul thinks is being over-cautious, and orders further investigation. Meanwhile, Harry is befriended by Rachel Wando, mayor of the town, coffee shop owener and divorced mother of a boy and girl, Graham and Lauren. Harry and Rachel take a shine to each other. Soon, though, the volcano erupts. It is too late for an ordered evacuation and so people scrabble to flee, the town is engulfed and deadly lava pours down from the mountain. Harry concentrates on helping Rachel and her family get to safety.
