Synopsis

The twelfth programme in a twenty-six part history of the 20th century, featuring eye-witness accounts and archive footage. Tells the story of how prosperity, improved living standards, and mass consumerism came to the people of Western Europe and America in the twenty-five years following the end of the Second World War. Shows how Americans, through the 13 billion dollar Marshall Plan, gave the process a kick-start with massive investment and how west European governments committed themselves to re-building and full employment. Takes the story through to 1973 when the Arab-led oil producers quadrupled oil prices and the era of rising real wages and full employment began to collapse.
