GURU (1997)

Film details

Fantasy film set centred around the inhabitants of the Valley of the Blind in the mountains of India. Beginning in the quiet village of Vallikode, life one day turns ugly and violent when clashes break out between Hindus and Muslims. Raghuraman, the son of the Hindu priest watches his family and girlfriend burnt to death. He joins an extremist group and whilst escaping from the police, he stumbles on an ashram. There he meets Vaidehi who persuades him to touch the sandals of the Guru. He does so and slips into a trance. He finds himself in the Valley of the Blind. Raghuraman realises that the cause for the villagers' blindness is a forbidden fruit. He manages to discover the antidote and thus help them regain their vision. The Valley stands as a metaphor for a world where people are totally blinded by superstitions and prejudices.
