Synopsis

A five-part series showing what went on behind-the-scenes in the five years prior to the end of British rule in Hong Kong. Made with the close co-operation of the colony's last Governor, Chris Patten, reveals his candid views on the negotiations over the British withdrawal. The programme titles and themes are: `A Democratic time bomb' explores mixed reactions to Chris Patten's plans; `Restraint in difficult circumstances' Beijing denounces Patten and his reforms; `Lewis Carroll country' looks at the 1984 Joint Declaration, under which Britain and China agreed terms for the handover; `Loosening the screws' China threatens to rip up the Patten blueprint; `Another balls-aching week' China's antagonism towards Patten sharpens Hong Kong's fears about the future.
