The Ebb-tide (1997)

Film details

Drama about three men who escape from a South Sea island on a plague-ridden boat headed for Australia. The boat is full of empty champagne bottles, and they soon realise the boat is unseaworthy and the voyage is an insurance scam. Captain Chisholm locks himself away to get drunk - still afflicted with grief at his wife's death in a storm at sea and with guilt at causing the death of a shipload of men when he was drunk in charge of a ship. As a storm hits, Swanson and Bunch drag him out and force him to save them. After the storm they come across an island, where there are numerous graves - of the inhabitants who have been wiped out in a smallpox epidemic, all except the strange owner and a young woman who does not speak. He is determined to guard his priceless collection of pearls and, although suave, is clearly mad and dangerous.
