Synopsis

Drama. Kunhikuttan is the illegitimate son of a maid, of low caste origin and the lord of the manor where he lives. At the tender age of ten he undertakes a lengthy apprenticeship in Kathakali, an art encompassing theatre, dance and pantomime. Forced into an unhappy marriage as a result of a plot concocted by a man who is possibly his (previously unknown) father, Kunhikuttan falls in love with Subhadra, a young, married high-society woman who is in love with the character of Arjuna from the Mahabharata, whom he portrays on stage. She becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son she names Abhimanyu but refuses all contact with Kunhikuttan, although he continues to write letters to her declaring his love. Several years later, Kunhikuttan decides to give his last performance in Subhadra's childhood home, playing Arjuna. Subhadra and his son watch his performance but do not meet him. He disappears.
