Drama. Based on the life and works of Aksel Sandemose, the story is set in Norway in the early part of the 20th century. A young boy wants to become an author and runs away from home to take a job on a schooner heading for North America. He is harassed by the crew members; one particular shipmate, Wakefield, seems determined to make his life as uncomfortable as possible. The young boy goes absent without leave in Newfoundland but still finds it almost imposssible to escape from Wakefield.
