Synopsis

A three-part series of programmes which uses a combination of case studies and interviews with leading authorities to explore the growing problem of mental depression, which affects one in five people in Britain. The first provides an overview of the illness, and looks at current research. The second looks at the difficulties of diagnosing depression, talking to a psychiatrist who trains GPs to recognise its symptoms, and considering children's susceptibility to it. The third reviews the merits of various treatments, including anti-depressants, cognitive therapy, electroconvulsive therapy, and the alternative herbal remedy, St John's wort.
