Synopsis

The final programme in a six-part series in which Peter Jay investigates human economic history. In this programme covering 1945 - 2300 AD, he looks at the West's growing prosperity since the Second World War, and the disparity between this `success' and the fact that 80 per cent of the world's population live in poverty. Amongst the topics discussed are: the so-called `golden age' between 1945 and 1976, a period of economic growth tempered by ideas of social justice and state intervention; the inflationary years that followed with the change towards a less regulated free market; the Communist experiment in Russia and its aftermath; China's new revolution; the widening gap between the richest and the poorest, illustrated by a visit to Tanzania, one of the world's poorest countries; and the vital importance of good government, strong legal structure and an entrepreneurial heritage to a successful economy.
