Synopsis

John Berger talks to people about their memories. Berger selects three works of art and asks guests to describe which one of them best reflects their experience/essence of the subject. In this programme Garry Walker is asked to select which painting best reflects the essence of being young to him; paintings by Gericault, Caravaggio and De la Fresnaye. Harry Moir is a keen mountain climber and is asked to select a painting which best reflects the essence of mountain climbing, being in the moutains; paintings by Wilson, Martin and Bellini. The final paining is The Beach by Gutusso, Berger explains how it reflects enjoyment.
